What We Do

Area

The South Gloucestershire local group covers all of South Gloucestershire. South Gloucestershire covers the northern and eastern edges of the Bristol conurbation and the open country from there to the border of Gloucestershire, including Thornbury, Yate, Filton, Downend and Kingswood.

Campaigning in general

We campaign on local and national issues. Local campaigns include transport, planning, recycling, wildlife and nuclear power. We also campaign locally on national issues such as GM food.

We did a stunt at Sainsbury's on GM food, and lobbied the manager. We got good publicity for offering to paint bus lanes for the Council, and for a stunt about Bristol's threatened Green Belt. We have held large public meetings on greenfield development, GM food and the Oldbury nuclear power station.

We have compiled a Green Grub Guide for environment-friendly eating out in our area, with the support of the Council. You can get a copy by sending a stamped addressed envelope at least 9” by 4” to Vine Cottage, Kington Lane, Thornbury, Bristol, BS35 1NA.

We held a food day in Thornbury and polled local people on their views on GM. Our lobbying was a key factor in South Gloucestershire introducing GM-free local food in schools and elsewhere, and the Council declaring itself GM-free.

We are involved in the South Gloucestershire Local Agenda 21 and have an ongoing dialogue with the Council and local MPs Steve Webb and Roger Berry. We have produced major responses to proposed local plans, structure plans and the SW regional planning guidance. We held a public meeting in Winterbourne on the regional proposed housing figures which led to a mass response to the regional plan.

Meetings

We usually hold meetings on alternate Wednesdays, generally at a member's house at 7:30pm for 7:45pm. Some of these meetings are campaign progress meetings, and We also hold discussion meetings and public meetings.
